Plus de Provence

Over the past couple of months we have been trying to get out and about in Provence and see more of the area around us. There is so much history and marvelous sites around us that is seems a shame not to soak it all in.
Abbaye de Silvacane. A Cistercian Abbey preserved in its austere architecture with wonderful acoustics.

Lourmarin. A quiet provencale town in late winter, but just wait for tourist season.

We spent a day out in the Camargue in mid March. This swampy area is known for its salt production as well as being home to Flamingos!
These strange dirt formations that almost looked like leather are formed by the winds and water that is continuously in flux over the lower areas.

Considering how long their legs and neck is, it is amazing they can fly.

For Keith's birthday last weekend, we went hiking up St. Vittoire. It is a mount situated among a ridge of mountains near Aix-en-Provence. The views were spectacular and included a pair of parachute gliders using the updrafts to stay a float for hours. The exhaustive climb was well worth it.

It is hard to believe that monks lived this high up and would have to pulley up their food or trek it up along the steep rocks.
